This year we have re-engineered our air struts(read more below about hoop tension and our process for making our strongest inflatable awnings air struts to date). New valves(HR Military Grade). New Materials(Dyneema). New Colors(Bronze Oxide).
These setup amazingly fast with little effort.(Below the awning is setup to the channel commonly found on the side of roof top tents.)Our latest Gen 4 iteration is the evolution of the original AirHaven line—still inflatable, still ultra-compact and super-light, even so, this is our lightest yet.
AirHaven vehicle awnings are the lightest and most compact vehicle awning in the market(stowed ~20" x 18" x 5")—now using Dyneema for the air struts in our Marine version. This is our toughest and most versatile vehicle awning.
The AirHaven Marine (AH40m) uses Dyneemawhich is water resistant, UV-proof, ultra strong, puncture resistance. It is very strong and light. Packs down in a tight little package (approximately 6 lbs / 2.7 kg packed with bag and accessories. We quite literally can’t believe how tough yet light it is. All new AirHaven models now have a smaller diameter air strut, moving away from what we had learned in the kite and wing sport world where the struts are oversized for high surface tension(Hoop Tension).
Our now smaller diameter air struts shave weight down and reduce the size when stowed. This latest 2026 strut sizing is smaller while still performing exceptionally well—lighter, smaller, folds down tighter into its bag for smaller cabinet and locker storage.
Air strut surface tension is always a consideration. Smaller diameter struts have less surface tension at the same air pressure(psi) compared to larger diameter (bigger) struts. Hoop tension is the key for maintaining shape.
Hoop tension science is fascinating, and these designs are practicing T_hoop = p × r. Materials are also key to hoop tension (material thickness).
We met a NASA engineer who talked my ear off about how he uses hoop tension science for designing Mars habitats while we were at Overland Expo. Needless to say, we got along great and he has a new awning.
Our new Dyneema material allows for more pressure(p) to keep the same shape tension with a smaller radius(r). With Dyneema we can still achieve the same surface tension with a smaller strut for the awning to hold its shape even in windy conditions.
New Dyneema air struts in the Marine version allow us to increase the recommended pressure—meaning it stands fiercer in the wind (up to enhanced PSI tolerance), without adding a gram.
The annex attaches quickly, and each awning can use up to three walls (inflatable panels attach seamlessly to create enclosed space—use one for privacy, two for partial coverage, or three for a near-full room). After the lessons of previous generations, we’ve refined the valve design for 2026. We have opted for a valve that has a wide variety of pumps available in the market. We are now using HR (Halkey-Roberts) spring loaded military style valves. Pump to just 8 psi.
